Sinlae and Aymis, one of the female demi fey’s consorts, showed us around the thriving garden. Tani was entranced, jumping to get their attention, then pouting when they wouldn’t land on her shoulder.

“Stand still, silly. Sinlae won’t land if you’re all wiggly,” I said.

She froze in place and held out her hand. Sinlae fluttered down, landed and smiled. “Miss Tani. It is a pleasure to meet you.”

“You are so beautiful.”

“I am. Aymis would also agree.”

He perched on my shoulder. “She is my queen. My life. The most perfect faerie in all the three realms.”

“I see why you keep him around,” I teased.

“He is most useful. We have twelve children.”

“Good work, Aymis.” He puffed out his chest in typical guy form. No matter the shape, size or age, guys were guys.

Ellie led Tani and Ethan down a wider path and Jackie beckoned me over. “What are your plans?”

“To find a safe place to live for myself and my daughter.”

“I don’t believe you could find a safer place than here with us.”

“What are you saying?” Powerful females had caused me grief my entire life. This one seemed sincere in her wish to help, but…

Garrett appeared and waved at Tani. She ran to him and he picked her up, helping her choose an apple from the nearby tree. “Wash it first before you eat it.” He put her down and strolled to his mate. “Watch out, Hana. Jackie will have you settled into the villa in no time at all.”

Jackie kissed her mate’s cheek, all the while laughing. “It’s true. I love to set things straight. Tie up loose ends. But what I said is true as well. You could be happy here. Perhaps talk to Garrett about working for the team. The witch we used as a consultant has moved away.”

“I don’t know… I feel like we’re in the middle of things here. How could I keep Tani safe when your team has made so many enemies?”

For some reason my gaze shifted to Ethan. He’d been standing quietly off to the side. When he saw me looking he smiled, his beautiful eyes crinkling at the corners, the hint of a dimple forming near his mouth. I shifted forward as if a magnet drew us together, but I came to my senses and forced my body to turn away.

Could he somehow be casting a spell? All my instincts told me no. This was lust, plain and simple. Nothing magical about it. I wanted him and he wanted me. Our attraction was only getting stronger the more time we spent together. Maybe I should just give in to it.

Jackie touched my shoulder to get my attention.

“You say we’re in the middle of things here where the team meets. That’s true. But tell me where you and your daughter will be safer than surrounded by the strongest supernatural creatures in the three realms?”

Ethan moved beside me. “You could do some good working with the team. Maybe help the witches in Azure House.”

“How do you know about Azure House?” I snapped.
